Consumer Partnership and Leadership
Cultural Diversity Program
Western Australia’s population is growing faster than the national average, mainly due to migration. Over half of West Australians have at least one parent born overseas, and 240 languages are spoken across the state. However, people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) backgrounds often struggle with our complex health system. Language barriers, racism, and cultural insensitivity can result in poor health outcomes, and the voices of people from CaLD backgrounds are often left unheard.
Why Cultural Diversity Engagement Matters
We believe inclusion is essential for achieving the best health outcomes. In our diverse population, it’s crucial to address language barriers and promote culturally sensitive practices. By listening to diverse voices, we can identify system gaps, advocate for change, and ensure culturally safe healthcare. Inclusive engagement leads to better health outcomes, fosters trust, and upholds respect and dignity for everyone.
Our Initiatives
We’re dedicated to supporting diverse voices in health consumer engagement and improving health outcomes for people from diverse cultures.
We offer sessions to help health providers and community members understand and address the needs of diverse communities.
Community Consultations
We create culturally safe spaces for consultations to understand the health needs, concerns, and priorities of CaLD people.
CaLD Community Panel
Our panel of culturally diverse community members shares their experiences and perspectives to help improve health services.
Advocacy
We advocate for better use of interpreters and the inclusion of diverse voices in health research and policy development.
Health Literacy
We work to improve health literacy by providing information on how the WA health system works, rights in healthcare, and informed consent.
Connecting with Cultural Organisations
We build strong relationships with cultural organisations to hear from and support more people from diverse backgrounds to have their say on health in WA.
